Memorial for Tim Hindle

During Enrichment Day on Friday a number of students will be planting a tree and a lot of bulbs in our garden at the front of school in memory of Tim.   A suitable plaque will be designed and laid in the New Year.  A mural is also planned for inside "D" Block on a nature theme in line with Tim's interests.  Our recent Macmillan Coffee Morning raised a significant sum of money in memory of Tim.  Many thanks to everyone for their continued thoughts, prayers and support for Tim's family and friends.

College Open Events

We advise all our students, once they reach Year 9, to attend Open Events for colleges to see where they may go after Year 11.  Current Year 11 must be attending open events for the colleges that they are interested in, but many Year 10s and 9s should be going as well to focus their aspirations. The events this week are:

Monday - Accrington and Rossendale College: 6 pm - 8 pm

Tuesday - Blackburn College: 4.30-7.30 pm; Preston's College:  4 pm - 7.30 pm

Thursday -  St Mary's College Blackburn: 6 pm - 8 pm; Hutton Grammar School:  6 pm - 8 pm

Year 11 interim reports

These were sent out at the end of last week.  The key factor to focus on at this stage in the year is the "Attitude to Learning" grades - we know that it is simple:  those students who work with us and work hard do well....  (definitely not "rocket science"!)  If any of the attitude to learning grades (behaviour, effort, homework, classwork, assessments) are "4" or "5" (where 4 is "Of Concern" and 5 is "Of Serious Concern") please have serious words with your son or daughter and discuss possible actions with their mentor.  It is lovely to see so many really positive reports with so many of the current Year 11 working really hard at the moment.

Independent study

We strive for all our students to be able to work independently outside of lessons as we know that it is a vital skill for success at GCSE and in later life.  That is why we focus on ensuring that homework is set and completed each week.  With the half-term break approaching we will be setting work to be done during the break, particularly in Years 10 and 11, as this is a really good opportunity to reflect and catch up.  Every student needs some time away from school and study, we know that, but we would be expecting our senior students to be doing a couple of hours a day reviewing past topics and catching up on things that they have missed.  The approach will depend upon the subject, but "Doddle" (https://www.doddlelearn.co.uk/app/login) is a really useful resource for checking understanding of past topics.

Enrichment Day on Friday

Our enrichment days are always full of great opportunities for our students and Friday will be no exception.  We are always asked about clothing and uniform - on Friday everyon'e is in school uniform except for Year 9 (who are involved in a Duke of Edinburgh day).

And finally....

This week I was given a poem written by one of our new Year 7s in response to one of our recent "Thoughts for the Week" (https://www.waltonledale.lancs.sch.uk/curriculum/thought-for-the-week).  I thought that it captured the ethos of the school perfectly!  Thank you Millie....

Millie's Poem

We are all unique
In a different way
How we look and what we say
Everyone has differences
Maybe 1 or 2
But we are all still amazing
Whatever we do
What would we do
If we all were the same
Without diversity the world would be plain.

Have a good week....
